My Must Haves for Surviving Summer
Summer is here. The days are hot and the nights are long. As a mom of two young boys I don’t have much of what one would call “free time”. Our family belongs to a Country Club where we spend a good chunk of our time swimming in the pool during the summer. We also try and make it to the beach at least once while the boys are out of school. And we spend multiple nights a week at the ball park. So yeah, we like to keep busy. But my boys will only be boys for so long and I’m going to make the most of it. In order to keep up with everyone and everything i rely on a handful items to keep me sane and feeling put together.
PROTECTION FROM THE SUN
The most important thing in my summer arsenal is protection from the sun. I love hats, everything from cute and floppy to sporty and functional. I definitely have to have a good sunscreen that will last in the sweltering South Louisiana heat. And I have to have an even better self tanner (since apparently it’s frowned upon to bake in the tanning beds like the good old days, but pale legs don’t do me any favors).
This is similar to my favorite floppy hat.
This is my favorite kind of baseball cap. (My head is kind of big so i prefer men’s ballcaps)
My go to sunscreen.
My favorite self tanner.
QUICK AND EASY MAKEUP
Another thing that makes it easy to keep up with my boys is a quick and easy basic makeup routine. There are 3 must haves in my routine that make me feel put together and stand up to the sweltering summer heat. My tinted moisturizer, waterproof mascara, and lip gloss. I can and do wear a full face of makeup often, but these are my bare essentials for running errands, swimming with the boys, and just about any other activity taking place in “athleisure” wear. And for a little treat when it gets super hot, i keep a moisturizing mist in my fridge. So refreshing!
The Color Correcting Tinted Moisturizer that I use daily.
My favorite mascara LashSense with UnderSense.
Have to have my Lip Gloss.
Hydrating Facial Mist Serum is so great.
I have two requirements when it comes to sunglasses: they must be big enough to look oversized on my big head and the lenses must be dark enough that you can’t see my eyes through them. I’ll be honest, I like to people watch and don’t want those people to know what I’m doing. Don’t pretend like you don’t do it too. Other than those two things, I’m not too picky about my sunglasses. I have everything from expensive designer sunglasses to cheapos i don’t mind losing or the kids breaking.
My favorite classic, goes with everything sunglasses.
A cheaper alternative.
Oversized black sunnies when i want to be really nosy.
The ones my husband hates but i love.
BOOKS & AUDIOBOOKS
The last thing I like to always have on hand during the summer, truthfully more like year round, is a handful of good books and the Audible app. I always have a dozen or so books in my Audible playlist ready to go at any given time. And I’m on a big personal development kick right now but I’m totally a sucker for a good romance or fiction novel. Sometimes it’s just a few minutes to read one chapter or a 15 minutes car ride to list to an audiobook, but I relish that peace and silence whenever I can find it.
Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan
You are a Badass by Jen Sincero
Girl, Wash Your Face by Rachel Hollis
Get Over Your Damn Self by Romi Neustadt
Million Dollar Lips by Joni Rogers-Kante
The President is Missing by James Patterson & Bill Clinton
Lagniappe: wine is clearly a necessity for surviving, but that’s year round not just in the summer. I just go from white to rose to sparkling depending on my moods the season. So as long as I have a cute insulated cup with a lid, I’m good to go in that department.
